A self-employed businessperson is someone who intends, and
has the ability, to establish or purchase a
business in Canada that will create an
employment opportunity for himself and will
make a significant contribution to the
economic, cultural or artistic life of Canada.
A self-employed person may create his
or her own employment by purchasing and
managing a farm in Canada.
A minimum of one year work experience is required, although
previous self-employment is not a
pre-requisite. The self-employed applicant
must have relevant experience in cultural
activities, athletics or farm management.
The applicant must provide evidence of
sufficient funds to create an employment
opportunity for himself and maintain himself
and his dependants. He must demonstrate a past
record of being able to support himself and
his family through his own efforts and that he
would likely continue to do this in Canada.
Self-employed
person
This means a
foreign national who has relevant experience
and has the intention and ability to be
self-employed in Canada and to make a
significant contribution to specified economic
activities in Canada.
Relevant
experience
In respect of a self-employed person means at least two years
of one of the following types of experience in
the period beginning five years before the
date of application for a permanent resident
visa and ending on the day a determination is
made in respect of the application, namely,
(a)
self-employment in cultural activities or in
athletics,
(b)
participation at a world-class level in cultural
activities or athletics, or
(c)
farm management experience.
Specified
economic activities
In respect of a self-employed person means cultural
activities, athletics or the purchase and
management of a farm.
Available
Funds
Although conditions of permanent residence are not imposed on
self-employed persons, they must demonstrate
sufficient money to support themselves and
their family members after they arrive in
Canada.
