More
than 130,000 students come to study in Canada
every year. You do not need a Study Permit if you are planning to study
in a short-term program in Canada of six
months or less. If you are planning to
continue on your studies in another program
after the short program, you are encouraged to
apply for a Study
Permit before you come to Canada. This
will allow you to apply for your new program
from within Canada. Otherwise, you will have
to apply to a Canadian Visa Office from
abroad. Foreign
students wishing to study
in the province of Quebec will also need
to apply to the Quebec government.
The
Study Permit is a temporary status that
typically limits the foreign student’s stay
to the length of their studies. Generally
students enter Canada after acceptance by the
school, college or university and approval by
the Canadian Embassy or consulate abroad. The
Study Permit allows students with financial
support to take full advantage of the Canadian
educational process while providing the
possibility of limited access to
career-oriented employment.
Techocan
International Co. Ltd. has referred numerous
foreign students to such schools and colleges
as Selkirk
College in British Columbia, the University
of Manitoba in the province of Manitoba,
and McDonald
International Academy and Seneca
College in Toronto.
Letter
of Acceptance
An
application for a Study Permit requires a
Letter of Acceptance as proof of acceptance by
an approved academic institution. The Canadian
immigration authorities, in consultation with
educational Institutions, has prepared an
acceptable standard form for all Letters of
Acceptance issued by Canadian schools and
universities.
Available
Funds
The
foreign student must also prove financial
support sufficient to allow the student to
reside and study in Canada without working.
The student must prove the availability of
adequate funding for the complete period of
study without the necessity of earning money
from Canadian employment.
Intention
to Leave Canada
The
student must also prove that an intention to
depart from Canada upon the completion of the
period of studies. The student is required to
show a sufficiently strong connection to their
own country that they will leave Canada upon
the completion of their studies.
Medical
Examination
The
foreign student may be required to pass a
medical examination.
If the duration of the visit is less
than six months, no medical examination is
required. If the duration of the visit is
greater than six months, no medical
examination is required unless the student has
resided or sojourned for six or more
consecutive months in a designated country or
territory in the one year immediately
preceding the date of seeking entry to Canada.
In accordance with the Designated Country /
Territory List, the People’s Republic of
China and SAR Hong Kong is a designated
country or territory which requires a medical
examination.
Refusal
of Visa
The
Canadian Consular officer may deny an
application for a Study Permit where it
appears there is insufficient financial
support to allow the student to meet the
living expenses and school expenses without
working. The consular officer may also deny an
application for a Study Permit where it
appears there is little or no relationship
between the student's proposed course of
studies in Canada and career opportunities in
the home country. An application may also be
refused when, in the opinion of the consular
officer, there are insufficient ties to the
home country to compel the student to return
upon the completion of studies. Depending on
the economic conditions of the student's home
country, the consular office may be reluctant
to issue a Study Permit for fear the student
will not return home upon the completion of
his studies.
Students
Working in Canada
A
Study Permit allows qualified students to
participate in post-graduate practical
training work-experience or curricular
practical training programs. Students may be
permitted to accept limited employment.
Undergraduates are expected to successfully
complete their first year of studies before
commencing employment. Graduate students may
begin working immediately if work is a
requirement of their course of studies.
Change
of Visa Status
The
Student must leave Canada and seek a new Study
permit upon completion of studies or practical
training, or make application for a variation
of status from inside Canada.
